Unexploded Ordnance Surveys

Our company conducts geophysical surveys to locate buried unexploded ordnance throughout the United States, and worldwide. Our field survey crew can mobilize to your site the next day to locate unexploded ordnance, and can cover large areas in a day depending on the terrain and vegetation cover.

The most common methods that we use for locating unexploded ordnance are electromagnetic conductivity (EM) surveys and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. The use of these two methods to locate unexploded ordnance is described below.

Electromagnetic Conductivity Survey

Our firm has conducted numerous electromagnetic conductivity (EM) surveys to locate metal unexploded ordnance. Electromagnetic conductivity surveys are rapid and very accurate. The EM instruments are easily carried around a site and can locate any type of metal unexploded ordnance in sand or clay deposits in a short time frame.

Geophysicists operating EM-31 and EM-61 instruments are shown below:

Ground Penetrating Radar Survey

Another geophysical survey method typically conducted for locating unexploded ordnance is a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey. A GPR survey can be conducted over the entire site for metal or plastic unexploded ordnance, or in those areas where the EM survey showed anomalous conditions for metal ordnance. The GPR survey shows cross sectional information in pictorial form.

The pictures and image below show how a GPR survey can be conducted and the GPR profile that can be obtained.
