Three buried objects Locating Buried Objects

Surveys for Locating Buried Objects

When locating buried objects, the usual methods of digging, probing, or drilling holes in the ground can be exhausting and time-consuming. Our company conducts investigative surveys for locating buried objects using geophysical methods.

The most common geophysical methods used for locating buried objects are ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic (terrain) conductivity. These geophysical methods are non-destructive, and locating buried objects is quick and effective in most conditions.

Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys can be conducted for locating buried objects made of metal, wood, plastic, PVC, or any other material that has different electrical or conductive properties than the surrounding subsurface soils or rocks. The GPR system consists of a SIR-2 digital control unit and various transducers (antennas).

The GPR antennas can be vehicle-towed or hand-towed as shown below:

Electromagnetic Conductivity Surveys

Electromagnetic conductivity (EM) surveys and metal detector surveys can also be conducted for locating buried objects that are made of ferrous (iron-based) and non-ferrous metal. Geophysicists operating EM-31 and EM-61 instruments are shown below:

Other ferrous and non-ferrous metallic buried objects, such as buried tanks (UST), drums, utilities, unexploded ordnance (UXOs), and buried treasure, can also be easily located with the EM-31 or EM-61 instruments.
